Silver medals for alums Anning and Šutej at European Indoors

APELDOORN, Netherlands – Arkansas alums Amber Anning and Tina Šutej each claimed silver medals this weekend at the 2025 European Indoor Championships.

Anning anchored the British 4 x 400m relay with a split of 50.56 to a national record time of 3:24.89 to conclude the championship weekend.

Great Britain finished second to the host Netherlands, who won in a championship record of 3:24.34 and produced the current world leading time for 2025. The Netherlands were initially disqualified due to obstruction at the final baton exchange, but later reinstated into the gold medal position.

Šutej earned her third consecutive silver medal in the pole vault at the European Indoors with a season best clearance of 15-7 (4.75). Šutej had cleared 15-5 (4.70) on four occasions this season, including once in her series at the European Indoor, before improving to 15-7.

The pole vault gold medal was claimed by Angelica Moser of Switzerland, who also won Euro indoor gold in 2021 and Euro outdoor gold in 2024, with a 15-9 (4.80) clearance. Šutej has been the oldest medalist for Slovenia at the Euro Indoors in each of her silver medal performances at age 32 (2021), 34 (2023) and now 36 (2025).

Receiving the relay baton on the anchor leg of the 4 x 400m relay, Anning was obstructed by the Netherlands third leg runner, Cathelijn Peeters. Anning challenged Femke Bol during the final two laps of the race, splitting 50.56 to a 50.42 by Bol.

Netherlands move to No. 4 performer and No. 6 performance on the world all-time list while Great Britain is now the No. 5 performer and No. 9 performance. In comparison, the Razorbacks have a world best of 3:21.75 from a 2023 NCAA victory as well as the No. 5 performance with a 3:24.09 from a 2022 SEC win.

Anning adds another relay silver to her international medal collection. In 2019, she was a member of Great Britain’s silver medal in the 4 x 400m relay at the European Indoors. This past summer she claimed a pair of Olympic bronze medals in Paris for the women’s 4 x 400m relay and mixed 4 x 400m relay.

A pair of sub-50 second anchors were produced by Amandine Brossier of France (49.80) and Czechia’s Lurdes Gloria Manuel (49.82) as they battled for medal positions. Czechia claimed bronze in a national record 3:25.31 while Spain finished fourth in 3:25.68 over a 3:25.80 for France as each established national records.

Earlier in the meet, Anning cruised to a 51.01 prelim win in the first round of the 400m at the European Indoor Championships, but was disqualified for lane infringement.
