Smith Takes Head Coaching Position
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former University of Arkansas women’s basketball All-American Christy Smith resigned her position as an assistant coach Wednesday after accepting a head coaching job at Incarnate Word.
Smith takes over a program in its final year of transition to NCAA Division I status. Smith, who led the Razorbacks to the program’s first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1998, began her coaching career in the Lone Star State at Lake Country Christina School in Fort Worth, Texas. She has been an assistant at Valparaiso, Purdue and spent two seasons at Arkansas.
Incarnate Word, a member of the Southland Conference, is located in San Antonio.
From Arkansas Head Coach Jimmy Dykes
“I’m so happy for Christy to be able to realize her dream of being a Division I head coach. She cares a great deal for the student-athletes she works with and finds ways to make them better in all areas of their lives. When I was hired at Arkansas, Christy was my first “recruit” – I knew I wanted her on my staff and I’m thankful for her Razorback passion and contributions to our program we are building here. I know she will have great success at Incarnate Word.”
