Welcome To The Neighborhood With Grayce Spangler

The 2017-18 Razorback women’s basketball season is just around the corner and there is a lot of great things going on at Arkansas.

We have hired a new coaching staff and we welcome several new players to our roster as we move into this season. Who are these players? Where do they come from and what things do they like?

This is the first in a series of “Welcome To The Neighborhood” features as we introduce our newcomers and learn more about our returners.

Up first, newcomer and Fayetteville native Grayce Spangler.

Who would you most like to play HORSE with and why?
I would like to play horse with Shaq because he is considered one of the greatest, but is awful at shooting free throws so I would be able to win.

• When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball in the second grade, but didn’t really start playing serious until 8th grade.

What is your major and what are your career plans after college?
I plan to major in communication. I don’t know exactly what my plan is after college or even really what I want my job to be.

• What is your favorite basketball drill?
My favorite basketball drill would have to be the 11-man drill.

• What are you most excited about in coming to Arkansas?
I’m very excited to go to Arkansas because it’s always been my dream to go here. It’s always been the college the college of my choice and I’m excited because I get to go to the school I love, playing the game I love.

• What kind of teammate are you?
I am a very encouraging teammate. I like to yell and clap, but I’m also very goofy and try to lighten everyone’s mood. I think basketball is supposed to be fun so that’s what I try to do.

• Do you have a pregame ritual that you do before games?
I don’t have much of a pregame ritual, I usually just listen to some music. I do always chew gum before though.

• Is there a significance to your jersey number?
I don’t really have a special number. It used to be #13, but my freshman year a senior had it so I had to settle for #20, and then in AAU I was #8 for a while and then when I moved to Fayetteville High, I was #3 and for AAU I was #7, so I don’t really have a “special number”.

• What is something in your locker that would surprise people?
In my high school locker I used to have a light saber – That’s about the only special thing I had in there.

• What are some of your goals at Arkansas?
At Arkansas, one of my goals is to really try to bond with everyone on the team, and to help contribute to winning more games than last year. I want to get better and grow as a player and I know with the coaching staff that shouldn’t be hard.

• What is the first thing you would do if you were the head coach of a basketball team?
If i was the head coach of a basketball team – I have no clue what I would do first. Probably have a team meeting or something.

• What are 1-2 things you would tell your younger self?
Somethings I would tell my younger self would be: keep doing you, and never settle for less.

• What would you name the autobiography of your life and why?
I would name the autobiography of my life “Going With Grayce’s Flow” because I always go with the flow and just let stuff happen and don’t try to change or overthink it. Life is so much more fun that way. As long as you work hard and let God do the rest, you don’t have to worry.

• What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?
The last experience that made me a stronger person would have to be this summer staying dedicated to things. It’s hard when my friends are out doing stuff all day every day and I can’t because I have other responsibilities so I have learned to say no. It’s made me stronger and is helping me prepare for college.
