Winston Honored as 2019 SEC Football Legend

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas football great Dennis Winston will be recognized as part of the 2019 SEC Football Legends class at the SEC Football Championship Game in Atlanta in December.

Winston, an Arkansas linebacker from 1973-76, was selected to the UA All-Century Team in 1994. He led the Razorbacks with 13.0 tackles for loss and four fumble recoveries as a senior. He recorded more than 200 tackles, including a team-high 97 in 1974, and helped the Razorbacks to the 1976 Cotton Bowl where they defeated Georgia 31-10.

Winston was named national Defensive Player of the Week by Sports Illustrated following his 19-tackle performance in the 22-7 win over No. 5 USC in 1974. He was selected in the fifth round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played 11 seasons for the Steelers and New Orleans Saints.

Appearing in 143 games, Winston helped the Steelers to consecutive championships by winning Super Bowls XIII and XIV and is one of only six former Razorbacks to play in multiple Super Bowls. He is a member of the UA Sports Hall of Honor, the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.

The class will be honored at the 2019 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions” December 6-7 in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Dinner on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Winston was honored on the University of Arkansas campus during the season opener against Portland State on Aug. 31 to celebrate his SEC Football Legends recognition.
