TULSA, Okla. – Arkansas senior Adrians Zguns and a Razorback doubles team continued their march through the ITA Region V Championships Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Zguns won his round of 16 match, propelling him into Sunday’s quarterfinal round. In the doubles main draw, senior Matt Roberts and freshman Blake Strode claimed two matches to secure a spot in Sunday’s semifinal.
Zguns, ranked No. 58 by the ITA, earned a three-set victory against Wichita State’s Goran Vujaklija, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The Liepaja, Latvia native improves to 6-1 this season.
Zguns will face Oklahoma State’s Daniel Byrnes in the quarterfinals Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
Roberts and Strode advanced to the quarterfinal round by winning their first match of the day against Wichita State’s Thiago Dos Santos and Tiago Esperito Santo, 8-5. The Razorback pair, seeded 8th in the region, also notched an 8-5 win over Jiri Spousta and John Kellert of Missouri State in the quarterfinals.
Roberts and Strode, playing in their first tournament together, will take on Oklahoma’s Alexei Ivanov and Marek Velicka in the semifinal round.
In Saturday’s backdraw, sophomore Michael Jung advanced with two wins Saturday. Jung has won 10 of his last 11 matches and is 11-2 this fall. The Atlanta, Ga. native plays in the semifinals of the backdraw Sunday morning.
Also in the backdraw, Roberts and freshman Austin King were eliminated. Roberts retired from his match with Tulsa’s Andy Connelly to focus on doubles. Roberts is the nation’s 73rd-ranked player and 5-3 this fall. King was knocked off by Dos Santos, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Rogers, Ark. product is 7-2.
