Baseball Drops Series Opener to Gonzaga

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 16 University of Arkansas baseball team scored a pair of first-inning runs Tuesday evening, but Gonzaga countered with six unanswered runs of its own to pick up a 6-2 victory in game one of a two-game series at Baum Stadium.

Arkansas (9-4) had all the momentum early, starting the game with a single from Carson Shaddy and a double from Rick Nomura, before sending bother runners home in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead.

The Gonzaga (8-8) offense was quiet until the fourth inning when its first hit of the game was a three-run homer off the bat of Justin Jacobs to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage. Gonzaga would scrape together a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to earn the 6-2 victory.

Josh Alberius (2-2) suffered the loss in relief, allowing four hits and one run in 2.2 innings of work. Starter James Teague lasted 3.0 innings and gave up two runs, while walking four and striking out two.

The Razorback pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts in the game, while the offense left eight runners on base.

Arkansas and Gonzaga will cap the mid-week series Wednesday with first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. at Baum Stadium. The game will be broadcasted on SEC Network Plus and the WatchESPN app.
