Hogs Roll as Teague Shuts Down Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Arkansas baseball team (12-12) rallied from an early deficit Wednesday evening and scored five runs over the final four innings to cruise to a 7-2 victory over Memphis (15-5) at AutoZone Park.

With the game tied 2-2 after five innings, Bobby Wernes came to the plate and led off the sixth frame with a monster solo home run to left field to give Arkansas a lead they would never relinquish.

The Razorbacks would go on to score three runs in the seventh inning as Andrew Benintendi provided the big blow with a two-run triple of the wall in right center. He would come sliding in under the tag at home on the next play when Clark Eagan lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to cap the three-run inning.

Arkansas added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Chad Spanberger singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Tyler Spoon singled to right center to make it 7-2. Memphis would score a run in the ninth as Arkansas snapped the Tigers’ 11-game winning streak to split the season series.

James Teague (1-1) came on in relief and shut down Memphis, working 5.0 innings and giving up just one run on five hits to earn his first victory of the year. Keaton McKinney tossed the first 4.0 innings and allowed one earned run on six hits before giving way to Teague in the fifth inning.

Benintendi finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while Wernes tallied his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the year in the victory.

Arkansas continues a stretch of five games in five days this week, returning home Thursday evening and welcoming Ole Miss to town for a three-game series at Baum Stadium. First pitch on Thursday is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
