Justin Maullin Joins Razorbacks As Volunteer Assistant

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Justin Maullin will be joining the Razorback Soccer staff as a volunteer assistant going into the 2019 season. Maullin comes from UNC-Greensboro where he was the head men’s soccer coach for eight years and spent the last 14 years on the Spartans staff.

Maullin compiled an 81-73-24 record with the Spartans and a 42-24-10 record in Southern Conference play and was instrumental in bringing five SoCon regular-season titles and four SoCon Tournament titles to Greensboro over his 13 years on the Spartans staff.

“I am very excited and appreciative of this wonderful opportunity to join such a talented staff and program with woman’s soccer at the University of Arkansas,” Maullin said. “Colby (Hale) has proven to be one of the best coaches in the country by building one of the top programs not only in the SEC but also nationally.

I have been so impressed by the professionalism, work rate and attention to detail of Colby, his staff, the players, support staff and administration. Everyone has been so helpful in my transition. It is great to be around a program that truly cares about its staff and student-athletes. I hope that my experience can help add to the success of our student-athletes and staff and to continue to be one of the nations very best woman’s soccer programs.”

“We are excited to add Justin to this staff,” Arkansas head coach Colby Hale said. “He comes with a ton of experience and will bring some unique qualifications and perspectives as we strive for continued growth as a program.”

Last year, Maullin coached Leeroy Maguraushe to his fourth-straight All-SoCon selection becoming just the second Spartan to be named a first-team All-SoCon player for four-straight years since Scott Jones in 2003-06. Maguraushe led the conference in points scored, goals and was second in game-winning goals.

Two years ago, Maullin led UNCG to its ninth 10-win season since his arrival as an assistant coach and a second-place finish in league play. Maguraushe was the Spartans lone First Team All-SoCon selection, while Matt Mattis and Nelson Oceano were named to the second team. Maguraushe and Oceano led all Spartan players with four goals and six assists for 14 points each. Maguraushe also had three game-winning goals as it was his third-straight year with all-conference honors.

Oceano was also named the SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2017, UNCG’s fourth freshman of the year award in school history.

In 2016, the Spartans once again led the Southern Conference in scoring, tallying a league-high 116 points and 39 goals. The Spartans had 20 points more than the next-best team in the league and over 60 shots more than the second-ranked team in the conference. UNCG finished the year with an 11-7-2 overall record and a 6-4-0 mark in league play, advancing to the SoCon Tournament semifinals.

Senior forward Damieon Thomas led the league and highlighted three Spartans on the First Team All-SoCon Team with 24 total points (8 goals, 8 assists). Maguraushe and junior Eric Gunnarsson also earned all-league accolades while Maguraushe was named to the NSCAA All-Region Team.

In 2015, Maullin led the Spartans to the 2015 Southern Conference regular-season championship with an 11-5-5 overall record and a 6-1-3 mark in league play. The Spartans were undefeated at home during league play (3-0-2) and finished the year with a 6-2-3 record. UNCG ended the 2015 campaign ranking seventh in the nation in scoring offense at 2.19 goals per game.

The Spartans dominated the SoCon postseason honors with Jacques Francois earning league Player of the Year nods and Maguraushe picking up SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades. Additionally, the Spartans placed seven on the league’s All-SoCon Team and had two members named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.

In 2014, the Spartans placed three on the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team and had two members named to the All-SoCon First Team. Additionally, the Spartans earned NSCAA All-Academic Team accolades for the fourth straight year under Maullin’s tutelage.

Maullin spent the 2010 season with the “interim” head coaching title but made his promotion an easy decision for UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record, who officially made him the program’s seventh head coach Nov. 22, 2010.

He guided the Spartans to a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title that year, the SoCon Tournament championship and the program’s 12th NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. He was the easy choice for SoCon Coach of the Year honors, becoming the first rookie head coach in the 22-year history of the conference tournament to claim the title.

Maullin had just nine players return from the 2009 roster and brought 19 new players into the program. Seven of those new players were in the starting lineup on opening night. Among the new players were five all-conference selections, including the Southern Conference’s eventual leading scorer Hakan Ilhan.

Maullin was promoted to the UNCG top spot after spending five years as the program’s full-time assistant form 2005-2009. During his time as an assistant, the Spartans won two SoCon regular season titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Maullin spent six seasons as an assistant at UCF before going to UNCG. During Maullin’s tenure at UCF, the Golden Knights won 10 or more matches in five out of six seasons, advancing to the NCAA tournament each of his last three seasons..

Maullin attended William Carey College in Gulfport, Mississippi and graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing. During his time with the Crusaders, he served as a team captain and earned NAIA Academic All-America honors. He helped William Carey rise to a No. 1 national ranking his senior year.

Maullin was drafted into the Eastern Indoor Soccer League. He played two years for the Cocoa Expos and two years for the Central Florida Kraze. In 1993 he signed with the New Orleans Gamblers. After his graduation from William Carey, he stayed on with the Crusaders as an assistant men’s soccer coach for two seasons, helping to guide the Crusaders to back-to-back NAIA national semifinal appearances. He helped William Carey to a No. 1-ranking again as an assistant coach in 1997 and 1998.

In April 2007, Maullin was inducted into William Carey’s Wall of Fame for his post-graduation successes. Four years later, he was inducted as a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class at William Carey.

Maullin earned a master’s degree from UCF in business administration in December 2001. He and his wife, Brittany, have a son Hylton and a daughter, Evan.
