Razorbacks Represent In Mexico

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Future University of Arkansas women’s golfer and defending champion Maria Fassi leads after three rounds at the XCI National Amateur Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico this week. Fassi is joined by future teammates Regina Plasencia, Summar Roachell, Jordy LaBarbera and Shawn Rennegarbe at the Guadalajara CountryClub.

The four-day event wraps up Monday and Fassi, who signed with Arkansas in November, has a five-stroke lead over second place. The Pacuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, native opened with a 76 followed by a six-under 66 in round two that vaulted her to the top of the leaderboard. She carded a 73 in round three and leads with a 215.

Plasencia, a Guadalajara, Mexico, native, is sixth overall shooting 75-77-73=225. Roachell is 11th and in the clubhouse with rounds of 74-79-77=230, followed by Jordy LaBarbera who is 18th shooting 82-76-79=237. Rennegarbe rounds out the Razorbacks in the 50-player field shooting 252 with scores of 86-82-84 and is 42nd overall.

Fassi became the third star from Mexico to join the Razorbacks. Following on the heels of the recent success of seniors Gabriela Lopez and Plasenica, Fassi also advanced through qualifying to play in the U.S. Women’s Open this season. She finished as a runner-up in the South American Women’s Amateur and was the top-ranked female amateur in Mexico, according to the Mexican Golf Federation. Fassi won the Mexican Amateur in 2015.
