Devo Divulges: Get to Know Davonte Davis

What were some positives about being home during the pandemic?
Being home with family and friends. Knowing that it’s a global pandemic, there wasn’t much I could do at first, but I eventually got in touch with some people and started working out … but in a safe way, of course.

What was your typical day during the pandemic?
It was going to the track from about 7:30-8:45 am. After an hour break, I stretched with my uncle. Taking care of my body was a big deal for me. After that, I would lift weights from Noon-3 pm. I got in the gym to work on skills and drills from 5-6:30 pm. I ended the day getting a lot of shots up, usually from 8-9:45 pm.

What were your main points of emphasis you worked on in the past few months?
Getting stronger and just making shots consistently were my two main focuses.

How were your workouts different, preparing for your first year in the SEC, from previous ones?
Making my workouts more difficult and challenging. That was the key. I couldn’t do what I had been doing. I had to push myself more. Also, I worked on small details when it came to my workouts.

Outside of basketball, what are your hobbies?
I don’t do much or hang around a lot of people, but I went fishing almost every other day on my free time. I also love to eat so trying new foods was something I’ve done.

What is the one thing you missed most about basketball?
Competing and building new relationships. Those are the main two, but just playing, in general, was something I missed.

You are playing your ultimate fantasy game … What four players (current or retired) are with you?
LeBron James, Paul George, Kevin Garnett and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

What are some things on your “bucket list”?
Deep-sea fishing has always been on my bucket list, for now.

If you had a prepaid credit card with no limit, what are your big purchases?
I would buy my family the homes they would like. I would buy me a Tesla and a Range Rover. After that, I would start to build a zoo from scratch, hiring all the people who have been loyal to me throughout my life. From there, I’ll be expanding zoo locations, teaching people about animals and having fun with all the exotic animals.

What is your favorite TV show and what is your favorite movie?
My favorite show right now is Money Heist and I also like Ozark. I love the movie Coming to America as well.

What is one thing that stood out to you after watching “The Last Dance”?
Obviously, I was too young to watch Michael Jordan when he played so learning how the NBA went on behind the scenes with some of the best players that ever played was very interesting. I learned from the best, MJ, that just pushing through all pain and fighting for what you want is something not everyone wants to do.  But if you want to be the best, you have to do things others aren’t willing to do. You have to push not only yourself but the people on your team, also in your circle.

What piece of advice would you give to the “12-year-old” you … or the “freshman in high school” you?
That no matter how tired you are, work harder than everyone around you. Once you do that, never set limits. Always pursue much more than just a goal you and others want you to reach. There’s never a limit on how hard you should be working.
