Garza And Ortiz Earn SEC Postseason Honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Freshman Luis Garza and junior Alvaro Ortiz picked up honors on Wednesday afternoon when the Southeastern Conference released its annual men’s golf postseason awards from the league office.

After a remarkable rookie campaign that featured nine top-20 finishes, Garza becomes the seventh player in program history to land on the SEC All-Freshman team. He posted a 71.8 stroke average, had a team-best 18 rounds under par and finished runner-up at the Gopher Invitational as an individual.

The Leon, Mexico, native paced the squad in four tournaments and had the team’s low round 12 different times. He carded at least one round under par in all 13 events and had a streak of six consecutive top-20 finishes earlier in the year. Garza saved his low round of the year for the final round of the SEC Championship, firing a bogey-free five-under 65 as the Razorbacks posted their second-lowest team score in program history.

Ortiz makes his first appearance on the SEC Community Service Team, an initiative by the league to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes for their work off the course. As a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Ortiz has helped organize various community service projects throughout the department. He is majoring in international business and holds a 3.158 cumulative grade point average.

The Razorbacks will learn their postseason destination on Thursday, May 4 at 11 a.m. when the NCAA selection committee unveils the 81-team field on Golf Channel.
