Sandi Morris, Nikki Hiltz advance to Olympic Trials finals

EUGENE – The sixth day of competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials included advancement to the finals of the 1,500m and pole vault for Arkansas alums Nikki Hiltz and Sandi Morris.

Razorback Destiny Huven opened her Trials experience with a career best time of 12.77 seconds in the first round of the 100m hurdles. Huven moved to No. 4 on the UA all-time list with her performance.

Professional Gabbi Cunningham ran a season best of 13.16 to finish fifth in another 100m hurdle heat and advanced to the semifinal as well.

Morris only needed to clear one bar to reach the pole vault final. She was one of seven to clear 14-9 (4.50) on first attempt. Three more made the bar to get the field to 10. An addition three vaulters who made 14-3.25 (4.35) also advanced to Sunday’s final.

Another Arkansas alum in the pole vault field, Megan Houston, did not clear the opening height of 13-9.25 (4.20).

Racing in the first of two semifinal heats, Hiltz led the field with a time of 4:01.40, closing over the final 300m in 45.99, to finish ahead of Sinclaire Johnson (4:01.68), Heather MacLean (4:02.09) and Cory McGee (4:02.09).

Stephanie Brokaw also raced in the first heat, placing 12th in 4:19.28.

Professional Khallifah Rosser advanced to the final of the 400m hurdles with a runner-up time of 49.72 behind Caleb Dean’s 48.92 to win the heat. Rai Benjamin led the field with a 47.97.

In 200m semifinal races, professional Brittany Brown advanced to the final with a season best of 22.08 as runner-up to McKenzie Long’s 22.01. Razorback sprinter Rosey Effiong finished sixth in that same heat with a 23.04. Arkansas alum Jada Baylark posted a time of 23.20 to finish eighth in another heat.

Lance Lang ran 20.86 in the men’s 200m semifinal, finishing seventh in the first heat.

Jamaica National Trials

Arkansas alum Jaydon Hibbert won the Jamaica U20 long jump title on Friday with a wind-aided leap of 26-2.25w (7.98) and had a back-up mark of 25-4.5 (7.73).

Hibbert will represent Jamaica in the World U20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, later this summer.

Razorback Romaine Beckford tied for third place in the high jump with a clearance of 7-2.5 (2.20). Jamaica will announce who will represent them in the men’s high jump on Monday.

Andrenette Knight, who trains in Fayetteville, finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.37. Rushell Clayton won the event in 52.51 over Janieve Russell (53.33) and Shiann Salmon (53.71).

Canada Championships

In the women’s 800m semifinal, Razorback Tiana LoStracco placed ninth overall with a 2:05.94 and missed advancing to the final as 2:04.48 was the final time qualifier. LoStracco finished fourth in the second heat.

Alum Leroy Russell clocked 1:50.70 to place 15th overall in the men’s 800m semifinal.
