No. 3 Razorbacks host impressive field at Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE – No. 3 Arkansas hosts the Tyson Invitational this Friday and Saturday in the Randal Tyson Track Center as 34 visiting schools are represented in the annual meet.

In addition a few Razorback distance runners travel to Boston for races on Saturday hosted by Boston University and Boston College.

“We’re two meets from conference and this is a big meet,” said Arkansas men’s head coach Chris Bucknam. “The men’s side is all pretty loaded from the 60m to the mile, along with the jumps.

“It’s a good meet for us and we’re looking to make improvements. It’s well attended and there will be some big performances this weekend.”

Ranked schools joining No. 3 Arkansas at the Tyson Invitational include No. 6 Florida, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 16 Arizona State, No. 17 LSU, and No. 20 Iowa State. Additional nationally ranked junior colleges include No. 2 Iowa Western CC, No. 5 Barton CC, and No. 12 Butler CC.

“We have a really good teams, phenomenal teams on the men’s and women’s side,” Bucknam said. “We hope that garners some support and helps us get some people in the Tyson arena this weekend.

“It just helps us tell the story of how good this team is at a national level. Hopefully we get some fans to come out and watch these great athletes compete on a global level.”

Additional schools in the meet include Academy of Art, Akron, Campbell, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Fairleigh Dickinson, Houston Christian, Indiana, Indiana State, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Kent State, Little Rock, Louisiana Tech, Missouri, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Ole Miss, South Dakota, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Texarkana, Utah State, Virginia Tech, and Youngstown State.

Following his debut of 6.62 for third place in the 60m at New Mexico, Jordan Anthony races in the 60m again this week on the Razorback home track along with Tevijon Williams, who also competes in the 200m along with Lance Lang and Connor Washington.

“We’re pleased with the progress Jordan has made,” said Bucknam. “He’s only been with us a couple of weeks. So, it’s going to take some time for him to get up to speed. He practices hard, gets his reps in and has a great work ethic. He’s dialed in to running fast.

“There will be some peaks and valleys along the way. Coach Case has a plan for him. He’s racing against kids who have been training all fall. That will get sorted out as we go through the next couple of weeks. He did a great job in New Mexico to finish third in a field like that. He’s just a great competitor.”

Collegiate leader Romaine Beckford contests the high jump this weekend along with teammates Tomas Ferrari, Andrew Hughes, and Kason O’Riley. The long jump features Arkansas alum LaQuan Nairn along with Jamaica professional Tajay Gayle, the 2019 World Champion and bronze medalist in 2023.

Arkansas hurdlers in the 60m hurdles include Tai Brown, TJ Caldwell, Elijah Morris and Brevin Sims. They will be joined by the multi-event crew of Gabriel Emmanuel, Yariel Soto Torrado, Daniel Spejcher, Jack Turner, and Marcus Weaver.

John Kendricks and Soto Torrado are entered in the pole vault along with Arkansas alum Andrew Irwin. Apalos Edwards is scheduled to make his Razorback debut in the triple jump. The shot put field includes Rojá Stona along with the multi-event crew.

Razorbacks racing at 400m include Lang, Brandon Battle, Steven McElroy, and TJ Tomlyanovich. In the 800m the Arkansas crew consists of Jadon Bartholomew, Ethan Carney, Isaac Carney, Luke George, Wyatt Green, and Riley Wells.

Reuben Reina, who ran a sub-4 mile earlier this season, races at the distance again this weekend along with Tommy Romanow, Elias Schreml, and Jack Williams. Razorbacks in the 3,000m include Jacob McLeod, Myles Richter, Josh Shearer, and Williams.

Racing over 5,000m in Boston this weekend are Razorbacks Kirami Yego, Patrick Kiprop and Peter Maru. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday with a live stream available through FloTrack.com, a subscription service. Ben Shearer and Yego are entered in the 3,000m (12:30 p.m. CT) in the Boston College meet held at the New Balance facility.
