Phelps Rees advance

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of Arkansas women’s golfers Corinna Rees and Tiffany Phelps both won their first round match play contests at the 79th Women’s Trans National Golf Association Amateur Championship in Loudon, Tenn., Wednesday. Rees, a Pebble Beach, Calif., native is a senior-to-be with the Razorbacks. She entered match play as the third seed after a solid two days of stroke play at Tennessee National. Rees faced Rachel Smith of Mansfield, Texas, winning 2 & 1. She faces Elena Vukmir of Wauwatosa, Wis., Thursday morning as the field of 64 continues play. Phelps entered the match play bracket as the 12th seed and also won her first round match. The McKinney, Texas, native is also a senior-to-be at Arkansas. She opened with a 5 & 4 win over Maria Stapleton of Baneberry, Tenn. Phelps faces Ginny Brown of Austin, Texas, Thursday. Sophomore Katy Nugent qualified as the 47th seed and dropped her opening match against Cyna Maria Rodriguez of Sun City, Cailf., 2 & 1. Incoming freshman Victoria Vela of Mansfield, Texas, lost her first round match to Christabel Goh of Singapore 2 up. Play continues through the weekend.
