Razorback Athletics Commemorates Black History Month
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – As part of Black History Month, Razorback Athletics is celebrating diversity and the history and achievements of African Americans. Coordinated by Hogs UNITED and BLAC, the department’s Black Student-Athlete Council, numerous recognitions will be made throughout the month of February.
Festivities began last month when members of Hogs UNITED attended the 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Recommitment Celebration at the Fayetteville Public Library. In February, several Razorback teams will wear special Black History Month warmup shirts for selected competitions. In addition, Lift Every Voice and Sing will be performed prior to the National Anthem at one February home event in each Razorback sport competing this month.
Black history has been celebrated annually since 1926. The original week-long event was organized by historian Carter G. Woodson who selected the second week of February as the original celebration. In 1976, President Gerald Ford expanded the recognition to what is now recognized as Black History Month.
