Razorbacks Beat Ole Miss in SEC Match Play Quarters; Semis Suspended

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Thanks to a quick start by Luke Long, Arkansas defeated Ole Miss, 3-1-1, in the quarterfinals of the SEC Match Play hosted by Jerry Pate. The match began Sunday afternoon and concluded Monday morning.

Later Monday, the Razorbacks’ semifinal match versus LSU began but was suspended at 6:19 pm due to darkness. Prior to the stoppage, Arkansas won two matches, lost one and has two that were tied.

In the quarterfinals versus Ole Miss. Long, starting on hole 10, did not lose a hole in the 7 & 5 win against Brett Schell. The Fayetteville native won the first hole with a birdie and won five of the first eight holes. After tying three holes, Long won back-to-back holes to go up seven with five holes to play and give Arkansas its first point.

Segundo Oliva Pinto was 2-down after the first two holes in his match versus Jackson Suber, who is #46 in the world amateur ranking. Oliva Pinto won the fourth hole, but Suber was once again 2-up after winning the fifth. Oliva Pinto won three of the next four holes to take a 1-up lead at the turn. He continued his strong play by winning the 10th and 11th holes for a 3-up cushion. Suber won the 13th hole but Oliva Pinto won the next two holes for the 4&3 victory.

Juan Camilo Vesga clinched the team win and improved to 2-0 with a 2&1 victory over Kye Meeks. Wil Gibson tied his match and Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira fell to Sarut Vongchaisit in 19 holes.
