Skipper & Spaight Named SEC Players of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior linebacker Martrell Spaight and sophomore offensive tackle Dan Skipper have been named Southeastern Conference Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Spaight picks up the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week nod and Skipper was tabbed the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Skipper and Spaight aided the Razorbacks in posting the program’s first shutout over No. 20 LSU since blanking Utah State in 2006. It was the first SEC shutout for Arkansas since 2002 at South Carolina, the Razorbacks’ first shutout of LSU since Nov. 2, 1929 and the first time Arkansas had blanked a ranked opponent since 1960.

A native of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Spaight led the Razorbacks with 10 tackles (five solo) and posted 1.0 sack, 1.0 tackles for loss and forced a fumble in the win over LSU. His sack of LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings came on LSU’s second possession of the game, stalling a drive that led to a Tigers punt. Spaight also stripped Jennings midway through the fourth quarter as Arkansas recovered to preserve the first Razorback shutout against an SEC team since 2002.The Arkansas defense limited LSU to -1 yard in the first quarter and just 123 yards of total offense, the lowest output for the Tigers since Oct. 6, 2012. The senior has led the Razorbacks in tackles seven of the 10 games played this season and has tallied a team-leading 97 tackles on the year.

Skipper graded out at 83 percent, the highest mark on Arkansas’ offensive line. The Arvada, Colorado native was a member of the Razorback offensive line that allowed just one sack and protected quarterback Brandon Allen as he completed 16 of 27 passes for 169 yards against the SEC’s best pass defense. On 62 plays, Skipper did not miss an assignment and matched a team high with seven knockdowns against a stout LSU run defense.

The accolades mark Spaight and Skipper’s first weekly conference honor. The duo joins fellow Razorback teammates running back Alex Collins (Sept. 13), defensive end Trey Flowers (Sept. 20) and offensive guard Sebastian Tretola (Oct. 27) as Arkansas’ SEC football players of the week for the 2014 season.

The Razorbacks will host No.8 Ole Miss Saturday, Nov. 22, on Senior Day in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised on CBS.
