Walk-A-Thon to Kick Off HogFest Festivities
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Razorback Athletics is teaming up with The Lambda Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to help raise awareness and financial support to find a cure for Lupus. Fans attending the HogFest presented by Pepsi on Saturday, April 14, 2018, are invited to participate in the 26th Anniversary Michelle Wilson Walk-A-Thon. The Walk-A-Thon will begin at 8:30 a.m. at The Gardens on the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville campus.
The theme for this year’s Walk-A-Thon is “Striding for a Cure to Lupus Disease.“ The walk is a tribute to Delta Sigma Theta member and Alumna of the University of Arkansas, Michelle Wilson, who died in 1992 of systemic Lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. This disease affects one out of every 185 Americans; women being affected 10 times more frequently than men.
The Lambda Theta Chapter is dedicated to bringing down the informational barriers by promoting public awareness of Lupus. Along with promoting Lupus awareness, the purpose for the walk is to support the efforts of the Lupus Foundation and continue to provide scholarships in the name of Michelle Wilson. Currently, the scholarship awards four students an endowment to aid in their pursuit of higher education.
